One issue which is coming up a lot this week among the fashion crowd is relevance. How does a designer achieve that perennial status? Yes, there are the Warholian 15 minutes of fame which can mean five to ten years for a designer and then what? It seems that many designers enter their own self-referential bubble period after half a decade or longer at a house which then leads to a spiralling to irrelevance. Closing their ideas to the world around them and starting to often speak about signatures and DNA – the beginning of the end. Exceptions are Miuccia Prada, Hedi Slimane and not to forget the man who served as influence for yesterday ‘s winning Chloé show Karl Lagerfeld. All these designers are excellent fashion designers and more, so they are equipped with acute cultural radars mostly informed by contemporary art (Miuccia Prada), music (Hedi Slimane) or everything (Karl Lagerfeld). Jonathan Anderson seems to be made of the same stuff. A voracious appetite for culture and most importantly a hard worker, he had another dazzling Loewe show which stretched the imagination and showed his meticulous approach to fashion for which he is constantly refining his techniques and craft.
