While fashion has cooled down on the collab game Chitose Abe at Sacai seems to fire them up even more. This time Carhartt WIP, J.M. Weston and UGG were the chosen ones. And maybe that’s just the secret ingredient of her hybrid fashion as she can easily adapt her pattern making prowess to whatever signature fabric or detail the collab partner brings in. This time the UGG fur lining took center stage on her women’s footwear often in knee high boots, perfectly judged over A-frame knitwear. Abe took her collaborators to where the wild things are, a 1963 children’s picture book written and illustrated by American author Maurice Sendak – famous for its furry characters. So, leave it up to her to create a new category with knit fur pieces which opened the show and set the tone while the backdrop was a desert dune plastered all over her show space at the Palais de Tokyo. It helped to conjure up the mood for an army of modern nomads fully equipped with giant backpacks and camping gear. Plus, that’s where the utilitarian aspect of Carhartt WIP comes into play. Abe added two giant open pockets on the side seams of her pants which could be used for cleaning up a trail or to bring along more gear to the wild side expedition. Often wearing ski goggles under their plaid multi layered blousons and oversize shirts paired with baggy pants, Sacai channeled the prevalent outdoor vibe her own way. Deconstructed construction as in outerwear with corduroy collars in over- meets normal size layering.
