On the road

How Zegna is redefining itself

Funny, if you look at the letters of the word Zegna. It starts with a Z and ends with an A. CEO Gildo Zegna and artistic director Alessandro Sartori are in the middle of the ambitious project to completely turn the company upside down from A to Z. It becomes more and more apparent that the owner and artistic director have become a formidable duo who trust and appreciate each other like family members. Zegna is the biggest stand-alone menswear company in the world and after successfully launching itself on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021, the company is now forging forward with an entirely new vision for men. In Alessandro Sartori’s eyes one of the world’s biggest suit manufacturers has become the maker of separates, which fluidly blend together to build a wardrobe. The jacket, the underpinning and the pants are at the foundation of the modern wardrobe. Of course, it comes along with a full rebranding with new logo and icon. The Vicuna colored double stripe enveloping a black line, which stands for road 232 in Oasi Zegna, which symbolizes going back to the roots for the brand. Sartori in his few years with LVMH has properly learnt how to unearth roots, clean them and then replant them properly. A skill many Italian companies have not been as good at as the French. And let’s say, it was time to simplify the Zegna brand empire between Ermenegildo, Couture, Z Zegna and so on. It took Sartori only a few years to accomplish his mission. Even chairman Gildo Zegna generally dressed impeccably in one of his beautiful suits took the microphone in a cashmere overshirt and separate pants look to emotionally praise Sartori and his country. They stood before a brilliant collection of radical fabric research and new hybrid expressions of tailoring.

What we liked best?

To achieve his new approach of hybrid tailoring, Sartori’s garments have no lining or shoulder pads making for a fluid silhouette.

The icing on the cake?

The one sided curved flap underpinnings slightly resembling a second lapel made for good styling but turned out to be technical turtlenecks whose zippers were left open for the curving.
