Dolce & Gabbana have a winner collection but...

After a few sleepy seasons from Dolce & Gabbana – we mean that in a literal sense with all the pyjama looks they have been pushing – the Italian duo came back packing a sartorial punch. The archetypes of men being the concept introduced via a hyperbolic introductory video projected onto screens at their Viale Piave showspace about the many forms of men and masculinity today. As for the clothing, the collection felt like a best-of Dolce look back: Big furs on top of deep v-neck sweaters and knee high peasant boots, chunky knit wear, ripped denim pants and above all the sharpest suiting accessorized with statement jewelry. The mid section of the show gave way for the designers to explore more of the multiple facets of men they wanted to show: Sporty elements, a football player, a gym rat, the classic Dolce leo appeared via a morning coat, maritime looks towards the end before the brand-typical show finale of evening wear and super classic tailoring. A look that stood out was a tight brown leather jacket zipped up halfway worn with billowing pants and leather gloves. This is the kind of cool D&G we love and embodies Italian men’s wear to the core.

The casting of the show felt completely disconnected to the concept of the presentation they call The Portrait Of Man; a collection dedicated to the singular identity of every man. Having not one non-white model walk a show is a choice we see as a major step back, especially for this particular brand and its history of missteps.
