London F/W 2024 Highlights Part 3

To go green to be in the black at Burberry

Burberry pitched its biggest tent yet last night while closing out London Fashion Week

Daniel Lee is turning his Burberry project into a tour de force of determination that outerwear is the new fashion. Here is a designer who can will trends into existence and while his Burberry has not fully taken off with consumers, he sure has all the pieces in place that it can happen any minute. Yes, the economy is difficult, and the aspirational shopper has disappeared, yes Burberry has hiked prices for coats and boots and blankets while it has broadened its appeal as a truly British brand that plays to the masses on the football grounds and the elite in their palaces. Sure enough his third collection shown last night in a giant tent – clearly the biggest one he has pitched so far in a London Park – was an irresistible line up of the best coats, bombers and anoraks Burberry has ever seen in delicious shades of green, moss and gold.

These clothes feel like they belong to a parade, they have a festive quality while being built to do one thing. To brave the elements. And the craftsmanship is speaking volumes, every piece like a high funnel neck coat with faux fur coming out at the arms and neck to give a long and lean silhouette looks like it’s made to last for a wearer’s lifetime, the ultimate luxury and giving this Burberry a completely new platform. The impressive Harrods takeover, the new Bond Street shop with its shaggy carpets and the impressive Regent Street store which finally all hold Daniel Lee designed clothes and merchandise are ready to be stormed by clients as the video screens, ad campaigns and visual merchandising are all in perfect sync with the new outdoor vision.

Outdoor elegance?

This collection completely introduces this term to fashion vocabulary as most of the detachable plaid faux fur linings on most coats gave a visually striking look, upped the comfort factor and allowed Lee to play with color and patterns for a fresh result which was elegant.

Lee loves zippers?

Men’s pants came with half opened zippers in the middle of the leg, but the puckered lips look-alike zipper pouches on women’s sleeves were a show stealer. Backstage Lee said that zippers and hardware help him to express the London grit of Burberry.

Is there an evening aspect?

Of course, even when it comes to evening and a bit of glam, Lee prefers a simple craftsman’s approach. So, Naomi Campbell wore a wonderful simple crochet chain stitch gown while a draped gold velvet dress added to the regimental aura of the collection.
