After many seasons even a few years of rapid expansion and delivering hit after hit collection to critical and commercial appeal, Jonathan Anderson slowed down for his fall/winter outing to show a collection grounded in reality as in tank top and knickers ensembles or pushing the envelope of grotesque with giant sleeve coats. But it was mostly a calm affair with barely any fireworks like the cartoonish shapes from last season or the Michael Clark dance ensemble collection from one year ago. Anderson feels that the constant stream of information and imagery on our phones can create immediate overdosing situations hence also fashion is very much in danger of having the same effect on people with its constant barrage of celebrity imagery. Only last night during the BAFTA awards, some of the most prominent members of Hollywood stepped down the red carpet in fantastical outfits competing with yesterday’s London Fashion Week show imagery from Anderson or Conner Ives for example. How can those images survive a week or month’s memory? How can fashion be relevant when people are sick of it before it gets to the store or has been copied already? These are questions on the mind of fashion’s number one thinking man and his collection provided a good starting point with its lack of novelty for novelties sake but sense of fashion ambition.
