Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s Berlin-Mitte was the holy grail of cool. Cookies was the club of choice, Andreas Murkudis shop was still on Münzstrasse and everyone who counted lived in and around Mitte. We are thinking director Nicolette Krebitz, DJ Fetisch of Terranova, writer Moritz von Uslar and so on. Then came the influx of the trade fair Bread & Butter and Premium and a whole lot of denim shops which flooded Mitte and made it really uncool. Still there were many empty giant buildings to take over and when the international hotel chain Soho House decided to take over the former headquarter of the politburo of the East German Communist party just few steps away from Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz at the end of Torstrasse, it was a big gamble.

The exclusive members club, which also functions as a hotel has raised the standards of what a Berlin hotel can be. Built in the New Objectivity style, the building was first opened in 1929 and its remarkable facade has remained predominantly unchanged throughout the years. Now this part of Berlin is jamming with local creatives gathering for meetings in Soho House’s many restaurants or giant lobby. They come shopping at the Store which features a fine buy from international designers like Burberry, they visit the stand out spa and sauna facility or take a room while in Berlin for a few days. The English bathroom appliances as well as the spacious rooms with well-stocked bars speak volumes for what the building now stands for. Mitte hedonism and hospitality.
