Sylt Style

Louis Vuitton has a summer pop up on the island

Let’s call it the German Capri or even St. Barts. Sylt is the northernmost island of Germany, known for its tourist resorts, notably Westerland, Kampen and Keitum, and its endlessly long sandy beaches, green landscapes, flat wadden sea, lighthouses and beautiful old Reetdach houses. In one of them in Kampen, Louis Vuitton has opened up a small shop til August 20th to bring a special collection called Stardust and a custom made tote bag emblazoned with the word Sylt. We sent photographer Julia von der Heide to capture the shop and the charm of the island, which is reached from the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway since 1927, as von der Heide summers there as well. Unlike Sylt which like Venice is slowly disappearing and adding to its charm due to its exposed situation in the North Sea and its ongoing loss of land during storm tides, Louis Vuitton is a brand which is on the go and growing. Whether clever pop-ups like this one on Sylt or the new men’s universe created by the late Virgil Abloh, the brand manages to stay high-end and directional. Our new print issue in September features LV men’s in a Berlin skateboard scenario.
