Balmain F/W 2016
From Brighton Beach to the Bains Douches
In New York they used to say: He’s got it going on, 90’s club talk for someone in a great outfit at Sound Factory or the Tunnel that made heads turn. Well, the same can be said for designer Oliver Rousteing at Balmain. This 30-year-old designer has it going on in his super tightly tailored black jacket and snug pants with the lapel shaven off when he took his bow after he unleashed an avalanche of wardrobe suggestions which was his latest men’s fashion show for Balmain.
Just like in his women’s, Rousteing takes a stance for Paris. It’s always clear in his shows that he uses his Parisian ateliers for fine embroideries and his signature quilted leathers to have this rich often-otherworldly look to his clothes. Balmain men’s is on fire and these are exactly the clothes that rich NBA or NFL players or football stars like Paul Pogba who attended his last show crave. Money does not matter with this clientele and Balmain leather jackets retail in the high five-digit price sphere.
Rousteing likes his military influences so golden hussar jackets and heavy army coats build the core of an intricately layered look which also features leather cummerbunds, fake army patches and dangling curtain cords which gave a Russian officer vibe or liquor fueled family reunion in Brighton Beach New York. His tailoring gets better and better as his big shouldered coats in dark hues of blue proved.
The strength of these clothes is that taken apart, even more modest customers can find something like superbly cut black leather pants, a big trend of the season. By now we have gotten used to women in menswear shows but nobody makes them look hotter or better than Rousteing. GQ editors going for sexy female covers can only dream of the Balmain woman or should photograph them right off the catwalk. Seeing German stunner Kathrin Thormann we’re happy to report that Rousteing seems to be having a German moment seeing that Claudia Schiffer is in his current ad campaign. What’s next? A few nights in Berlin nightclubs maybe!
